Workday UNSPSC Commodity Codes

The United Nations Standard Products and Services Code (UNSPSC) is a standardized classification system for goods and services used globally in public & private sectors. The numerical 8-digit code corresponds to a specific good or service, and is broken down into four (4) levels as shown below.

Commodity Codes will be used in conjunction with Spend Categories

Both commodity codes and spend categories are important for accurately categorizing spend.
  • Commodity codes describe what the product/service is.
  • Spend categories describe how the product/service is being used.

Workday "Commodity Code Lookup" search tool

Procurement created a crosswalk of suggested spend categories based on the commodity code. The crosswalk was built in Workday as a search tool called "Commodity Code Lookup."

  • Suggested spend categories will be at minimum one (1) and at maximum five (5) per commodity code.

*Notes:

  • The suggested spend categories can be changed by the end user (if needed).
  • It is best practice to double check that the commodity code selected is correct, even if it was auto populated from Workday supplier punchout (B2B) catalogs, as it will guide the suggested spend categories.
