If you need a professional headshot, but you can’t get to the Career Center for a session this guide will give you alternative options.

Beginner Level:

Visit a local Walgreens, CVS, or post office in your business attire and request a passport photo. The employee may tell you to not smile, but just reassure them that it’s okay. You will stand in front of a plain white background, then give your best smile. The employee will print out your picture and send you on your way with your brand new headshot. This paid service may range from $10-$20.

To get a digital version of the picture use the scanner feature on a printer or a mobile scanner app. Printers and scanners are available to use at Office Depot or the library.

Let’s Take Things up a Notch:

Student Headshot Example

Grab a friend or use a tripod and find a solid wall. Using the framing guide below take the picture. Make sure the final picture isn't blurry and is taken
in portrait mode.

  • Include your head shoulders and upper chest.
  • Leave an approriate amount of head room.
  • Use a plain white background, if possible.
  • Ensure the light source if facing you.
  • Look straight into the camera.

Some Design Skills Required:

After your photo is taken, to ensure the crisp white background you can edit at home. Use a photo editing tool to remove the existing background and replace it with white. Here you can also touch up your smile or remove any flyaways in your hair for a more refined final image.

Now that you have these amazing tips it’s time to capture your best angles. Go out and get to snapping.
