Undergraduate Awards and Scholarships
Friends of French Studies Awards
The Undergraduate Curriculum Committee will accept nominations from lower-level French instructors and will choose recipients for each award. Seven awards were created for outstanding undergraduate students in specific categories with criteria as noted below.
- Outstanding Second-Year French Student in Language - one or two awards presented to an outstanding student in a second year French language course (French 2101, 2154).
- Outstanding Second-Year French Student in Literature - one or two awards presented to an outstanding student in a second year French literature course (French 2102, 2155).
- Outstanding Third-Year French Student in Language - one or two awards presented to an outstanding student in a third year French language course (French 3058, 3060, 3080).
- Outstanding Third-Year French Student in Literature - one or two awards presented to an outstanding student in a third year French language course (French 3071, 3072, 3080).
- Outstanding Student in Cajun Studies - one or two awards presented to an outstanding student in Cajun French Studies.
- Outstanding Senior French Major - one or two awards presented to an outstanding Senior French Major.
- Barcelonnette Scholarships - The scholarships will be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students attending the summer program in Barcelonnette, France. The funds are divided by the number of students in the program. This scholarship is intended to assist with travel expenses. Students must submit a letter of intent (in English); transcripts; and one or two letters of recommendation.
Louis D. Curet Scholarship in French
Award Amount: $100 or as funding permits. 
Eligibility Criteria: The scholarship is awarded one time to an undergraduate student
                  with an overall GPA of 3.0 or above. Preference is given to students planning to pursue
                  a career teaching French in Louisiana after graduation. This award is designated as
                  a one year award, but may be awarded a second time as determined by the Undergraduate
                  Curriculum Committee. Full-time undergraduate French majors will be automatically
                  considered for this award. 
               
Undine Livaudais Fitzgerald Award
Award Amount: $100 or as funding permits.
Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student in French with
                  an overall GPA of 3.0 or above planning to study in Paris, France and is intended
                  to help pay students’ travel expenses. Preference is given to graduating seniors.
                  Students who are French minors and majors will be considered for this award. This
                  award will be withdrawn if the student is placed on disciplinary probation or if the
                  student resigns or “drops out” of the university. Recipients of this award will be
                  provided with biographical information about Mrs. Fitzgerald and a history of the
                  award. 
               
Agatha La Croix Memorial Award
Award Amount: One or two awards of $100 or as funding permits. 
Eligibility Criteria: This scholarship was established in memory of Miss Agatha La
                  Croix and is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in French with
                  an overall GPA of 3.0. Full-time undergraduate French majors will be automatically
                  considered for this award. 
               
Hoguet Alexandre Major Summer Scholarship at University Sainte Anne, Nova Scotia
Award Amount: 2 X $1000 or as funding permits. The amount will be determined at the
                  discretion of the Student Awards and Scholarships Committee (SASC) and limited to
                  the available earnings. 
Eligibility Criteria: The recipient will be selected by the SASC and the Director
                  of Undergraduate Studies (DUS). The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students
                  planning to attend the summer program at University Sainte Anne in Nova Scotia. The
                  scholarship is intended to assist students with travel and lodging expenses. Students
                  entering the competition must submit a letter of intent (in English), transcripts
                  and one or two letters of recommendation.
               
Hoguet Alexandre Major Summer Scholarship at Ubaye Valley
Award Amount: 6 X $1,250 or as funding permits. The amount will be determined at the
                  discretion of the SASC and limited to the available earnings. 
Eligibility Criteria: The recipient will be selected by the SASC and DUS. The scholarship
                  is awarded to undergraduate students planning to attend the summer program in Barcelonnette,
                  France. The scholarship is intended to assist students with travel and lodging expenses.
                  Students entering the competition must submit a letter of intent (in English), transcripts
                  and one or two letters of recommendation.
               
Hoguet Alexandre Major Summer Scholarship at University Laval for Undergraduate Students
Award Amount: 2 X $1,500 or as funding permits. The amount will be determined at the
                  discretion of the SASC and limited to the available earnings. 
Eligibility Criteria: The recipient will be selected by the SASC and DUS. The scholarship
                  is awarded to undergraduate students planning to attend the summer program at University
                  Laval in Québec City, Canada. The scholarship is intended to assist students with
                  travel and lodging expenses. Students entering the competition must submit a letter
                  of intent (in English), transcripts and one or two letters of recommendation.
               
Hoguet Alexandre Major Study Abroad Scholarship for Undergraduate Students
Award Amount: 2 X $1,000 or as funding permits. The amount will be determined at the
                  discretion of the SASC and limited to the available earnings. 
Eligibility Criteria: The recipient will be selected by the SASC and DUS. Priority
                  will be given to undergraduate students applying for a year abroad over those applying
                  for a semester or a summer abroad. Students entering the competition must submit a
                  transcript and at least one letter of recommendation
               
Corinne L. Saucier Scholarship
Award Amount: $1,000 or as funding permits.
Eligibility Criteria: Awarded to a graduating senior, majoring in French or Spanish
                  with an overall GPA of 3.0 or above who is planning to do advanced study or research
                  at LSU or in a foreign country. Preference is given to students planning to enter
                  the teaching profession. Full-time French majors who are graduating seniors will be
                  automatically considered for this award. 
               
James M. Smith Jr. Endowed Scholarship in Romance Languages
Award Amount: $1,500 or as funding permits. The award is intended to assist with the
                  payment of tuition in the upcoming Fall and Spring semesters. 
Effective Dates: Awarded in the following academic year (one-half to be distributed
                  in the upcoming fall semester, and one-half to be distributed in the upcoming spring
                  semester.)
Eligibility Criteria: Full-time undergraduate student majoring in a Romance Language.
                  The recipient must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above and an overall 3.5 GPA in the
                  major. Full-time undergraduate French majors will be automatically considered for
                  this award.
